There are hard skills and soft skills.
Hard skills:
Make sure you master all the software and hardware tools so you are not limited by platform or system constraints…
Learn and own your design principles, basic design patterns and frameworks for web, devices, sites and apps…
If you are in UX, UI field, read up on psychology, human performance, etc. To help you make better user-centric decisions. If you are other kinds of designer, master the information of your own domain.
For soft skills,
lLearn how to take criticism, how to collaborate, lead and be part of a team. I force my students to learn how to present. A design concept is really only as good as the presentation cause nobody can read your mind otherwise…
I’d say maybe these are good ways to start?
