Something as simple as giving a thumbs up, drawing a checkmark or star using a dry erase marker on the students desk, saying “great job” or “I like the way (student) is... (insert positive choice student is making), can go a really long way! I use token economy in my classroom. I created a grid on my dry erase board using painter’s tape. Students get a check for good choices and earn tokens to purchase things from our classroom store. It’s a great visual.
Positive framing. Catch the good things. Always praise the good. Reward systems for staying on task and following directions.
Tickets. Try giving tickets the student/s every time you observe behavior as appropriate (e.g.,
looking like a student/ not blurting out/ staying in their seat, etc.- the list is endless). Have a plan w the student - X # of tickets = ? (extra 3 min computer time, drawing time, something the student will want, etc.). Flood the students w tickets early on to create buy-in as well as student success. For most students this works very well.
