The most important thing is that the program is CAAHEP accredited. There is not usually a difference in pay once you are registered. To be registered you need to take the ARDMS board exam. Some state also require a license. A bachelors would be good to have to eventually be promoted into a lead tech or manager position. You could go to a more affordable 2 year program and complete your bachelors while you’re working.
Difficulties in sonography are mostly ergonomics/on the job injuries. We physically push the transducer against people to take images and we have a lot of neck/shoulder/back/wrist/elbow pain and injuries.
Another difficulty is limitations on career growth opportunities. There are not a lot of opportunities “beyond” scanning.
