Well, I don’t believe that has any bearing on a person’s teaching ability
100%agree. ( I personally have a nose piercing and a small tattoo and it is never brought up)
We’ve had people try to say things from upper management but our Principal has always defended us in saying that it hasn’t affected our teaching & that we are still getting top scores!
As long as tattoos are appropriate for school age kids, they can be visible.
Our district has teachers so tatted up, they’d give Adam Lavene a run for his money. I love them all, except for “Gages”. Js
We have a special education teacher who sings in a band. He has tattoos up and down his arms. As far as I know nothing has been said to him. Our main principal also has some tattoos that are visible at times. Doesn’t seem to be an issue. Body piercings are not an issue, no one seems to have those, just the ears, some teachers have double piercings in their ears.
I have a nose ring. It's never been an issue. Before I got it I looked in my handbook (it didn't say anything in the topic) then I talked to my principal. I just didn't want to spend the money is I was going to have to take it out. (it was only my second year teaching at the time)
My opinion, if we didn't have teachers with visible tattoos or piercings why should we give our children the same respect that we grew up with. I think this is one of the problems in society. The leaving of morals and values for instance teacher - student personal inappropriate relationships.
Can you clarify this? I’m not sure what you mean by your first sentence.
I couldn’t care less what anyone has, as long as it’s not vulgar and the adult isn’t trying to influence a student into getting either one. I’m in GA and a small town; I had to ask if a haircut and color was ok. I was only allowed to get the haircut. I adore piercings and tattoos. I have 24 piercings (mostly in my ears; recently got 2 facial piercings: nostril and Ashley(lip) and 2 tattoos. I don’t plan on stopping anytime soon.
If we have a school rule regarding tattoos, I don’t know what they are. We have several teachers with tattoos, some very visible, some not so visible. We’ve had a few teachers with small nose piercings as well.
To my knowledge, no parents have complained to admin regarding teachers with tattoos or piercings.
I completely agree, tattoos and piercings do not affect a persons teaching ability, I can also understand that “excessive” visible body art can be distracting and therefore counter productive. Now, everybody is going to define “excessive” differently, so that is something to consider.
We do have a male principal with earnings in both ears and I know a parent complained, but I do not think anything became of it.
No rules that I know of. I have seen people try to cover them, but honestly we all knew. I think this whole idea is changing and should change. That being said, certain tattoos are obviously not okay for work
We have a dress code that says they shouldn’t be seen, no piercings other than ears. Teachers stick to the piercings one, but lots of us have tattoos that can be visible. So do many of our students
Our policy is ears only for piercings and nothing is said about tattoos or hair color for the matter.
I have a half sleeve and another tattoo on my forearm of the other arm. I’ve never been told to hide them at either school I was at! Personally, I don’t know how I’d feel being at a school that tells me to cover them up. Parents have never said anything to me either actually
No policy
The county which I work in has the teachers follow the students dress code. Of course, the principals can request abe make requests at their school, BUT we are union so principals can only make requests. For example my first principal asked that we wear jeans only on Fridays, and face piercing she liked the jewelry to be clear or as small as possible. My last principal didn't care about piercings, and asked that our visible tattoos be appropriate for elementary students to see, or cover them during contractual hours. However, she hated flips flops and leggings. She said " If you can wear your sandals in the shower, then please don't wear them to school" & "as comfy as leggings are...please be mindful that we have students who are starting to acknowledge body parts on the opposite sex; so please make sure your parts are covered by a beautiful top if you need to wear your comfy leggings". I have a half sleeve on each arm, tattoos on my feet and calf and a nose ring, and neither principal had an issue.
No rules. I have a nose and ear piercings, as well as a tattoo on my inner arm and ankle.
