First all, never cry over work. Ever.
Second of all, I usually let them continue on their rant and when they’re done, say “are you ok done? Because all of that doesn’t get your food any faster, I guarantee you.”
OR
“Ma’am I am so sorry for the delay, and you know we want you to be happy, so what I can do for you is cancel your order, refund your money, and you can go ahead and grab a meal at somewhere that’s willing to serve poorly behaving children. I’d suggest Chuck E Cheese. Where a kid can be a kid. ….. now are you an adult or are you a kid?”

Best reply ever!
I only witnessed this once. I worked in kitchens. it was a Sunday afternoon. Some lady started berating a server. About the wait. for dinner to arrive. After her tiraid the server said Mame all the the tables are full we had an a party of 8 that turned into 14 at 12.30 it put undue strain on our sunday staff. Let me get the maitre de and settle your bill and and remove the remaining order not delivered. He can get the manifest. I will have the bussers clear your table. I need to go talk to the hostess and have the next dinner party come to the table. There are more restaurants in newport im sure 1 has open seating. there are about 80 people in the dining room. we only heard complaint from you. Everyone else is enjoying the day

I would apologize and thank them for their patience. If they still bother, then escalate it and ask them to leave, or you are calling the cops!
