Well, when I am experiencing low morale or motivation in my job, I know I appreciate more money or the opportunity to make more money. Or more PTO time. I am more motivated by compensation than anything else. I know that’s not everyone’s cup of tea, but that’s where I stand on things.
I think showing up and checking in could do well. Asking them what’s on their mind and that you believe in them?
Currently dealing with this now and I've tried every approach imaginable. I've backed off because it's obvious they don't want to talk about it, but I stay supportive and help them where I can because it's easy to see something is going on and if I can make their lives just a little easier, that's really the least I could do.
Without trying to get too personal, I ask them if anything is going on that we can help with to support them in doing their job. Especially if the employee was doing great, but had an observable dip in morale. We want to support our employees in doing the best they can. Sometimes it's as simple as letting them take some time off, change of schedule, some mental health support.
If it's someone I'm working with closely, or I have a friendly relationship with, I'll try to get a sense of what's going on. Sometimes people say things that indicate low morale but they're just blowing off steam. So I wouldn't want to make more out of something than it deserves. But if the person was sincerely fed up I'd try to ascertain the problem and try to help them get their head back in the game.
