Yes I think charisma plays a huge role. Skills only matter if nobody knows anybody.
So much about industry success is how good you are at "playing the game." I would prefer to be someone who does her work quietly, does it very well, and then goes home. Having to act outgoing and spend some of my free time socializing just to get ahead is not what I want to be doing.
It's a mix of everything. You have to be skilled AND visible if you want to move up. Not to mention a little bit lucky.

I do truly believe these days it's who you know rather than how good you are at your job, which I think is such a shame! I know so many people that have been favoured because of who they know, over who should actually get recognition.
