I would say my 20% Time. If students give 100% of their effort for 80% of the week, they earn 20% Time on Fridays to work in a project. My missing assignment count went way down, and for the most part, behaviors were better.
Completing assignments on time, meeting classroom expectations, no tardies, etc. This year my missing assignment count went way down, and except for a few students, behaviors were so much better.
After attending a conference, I experimented with accepting late work for no penalty this year. Students did have to turn work in during the unit, but I felt like it was more important for them to practice the skill. The end result saw many more students turning in work, and, as a result, developing their literacy skills. As the year progressed, more students turned their work in on time because they realized that getting behind led to more stress.
IMS: At the conference they asked the question: Are your grades based on skill or behavior? Behavior would include turning it in late. They also discussed updating quiz grades as the students improve the skill instead of averaging quiz grades. The final quiz grade should reflect their most recent skill level. All of this kind of leads to standards-based grading, which our district is not ready to address.
As a veteran teacher, all of this stepped all over my toes, so I decided to start experimenting with 1 element at a time.
I give my students the ability to turn in work late. Learning should never be a one time experience. They don’t get full credit, but they do get some points.
So many students lock their assignments, and we have a couple of teachers who will not unlock assignments no matter what. I feel like students should have the opportunity to submit stuff, even if they get points deducted.
