I was working for PwC in a major European city. Senior Manager (equivalent of US Director) in a niche field. So niche there were only like 10 people in the country that did what I do. I spent 95% of my time at one client office of a multi national bank, as an SME for their central team of 25 people. The head of the department was wonderful and he loved me. His whole department loved me. I worked there like this for 3 years when the head of the department tried to poach me. Great idea because he already knows I’m competent, a leader, and that his team love working for me. I had intel from a friend in the department on the salaries of two “mid level team members” - the kind of experienced workers that have been there a long time and know a lot of stuff but don’t have the leadership or technical chops to oversee or manage team functions. The department head wanted me to join his leadership team, with 2 other people. Those 2 other people (including the department head) were all late 50s ish, and I was 35 ish. I was making about €90,000 at the time, and I had calculated I should make about €200,000 in this role at the bank. The two mid-level staff were making €130,000 and €150,000. The friend (one of the mid-level staff) even told me I should ask for €200,000. Then the head of the department offered me €84,000 I was in shock. I told him it was less than what I was making at PwC (the amount I did not disclose) and he said “Well this is a very attractive salary for someone in their 30s”. And there it was confirmed, I was being compensated for my age and not what I bring to the table. I did not even counter his offer it was so embarrassingly low. A few months later I quit PwC, became self employed, and now I make €200,000 working 20 hours a week.
All of the above at different times in my career.
The entire career until I left the profession after a few yeats
Haven’t been disappointed yet, though I’ve only been through two raise cycles
