If we can learn anything from this younger generation is that history shows, the data proves it to be true, that wearing multiple hats, taking on more than what your job description requires will only affect your health, and personal relationships.

Unfortunately, doing more is not rewarded. They only miss you after you are gone. Best case, they call you afterwards to ask you for advice, unpaid of course.
The trick is not to do more, but to do things which are highly visible. For example, offer to join the team organising the Christmas Party, summer BBQ, etc. Stupid, right? But guess what, you will meet all the managers in the process and they will know you by name. Next re-org, you won't be on the list - too valuable for the company. LOL
Sad but true. Seen it many times.
Visibility is key for promotions.
