I applied to Pinterest and Amazon. I have interviews at both and it's looking positive. I'm a little worried I set the bar too low with my initial response for salary range expectations when I applied. Anyone ever told the recruiter afterwards a higher range and been successful? What might you say to adjust the range? Thoughts?

Those salary bands generally relate to the position, but the wide variation within them would take into account someone's experience. That's the conventional explanation. So if you try to negotiate for the high end of the range, you'll usually be told that's what someone with more experience would be receiving. As you note, sometimes the band is so wide that it's essentially pointless.
My former and current company both target hiring at 80% of the median salary. That is just a guideline and there are cases they go all the way up to the median. But very rare to go above that for stating salary.
In talking with a recruiter about the "range" they pposted, they provided a great explanation they advised experience and location are the biggest factors. You should ask for the higher end of the scale if you live in high rent districts, i.e. New York, LA, etc.
