When you have one job, you try to budget based on your income less expenses. As you add more jobs (J2, J3, etc), your income increases while your expenses are relatively the same.

Do you change your spending habits now that you have more income? Do you pretend that your income hasn't changed while socking away the income from the other jobs? Or do you change your spending habits slightly and still sock away the majority of "extra income"?

The only things I recommend increasing is debt payments and investment contributions. If you have busy seasons at jobs where it is hard to balance the two, I would consider spending on things that save you time. This could be a robot vacuum, a house cleaner, laundry care, lawn care, etc. I don’t mention grocery delivery because that adds an increase cost percentage wise and curbside pick up is typically free for a lot of stores.

Really great ideas! Time-saving options can be more valuable than more money in the bank account. Some food delivery can even be free is some areas, depending on the store's offerings. I know we get free home delivery due a perks program.

Anyone in consulting and doing OE? Using bench time for J2+ seems like a good opportunity in this environment, considering it wouldn’t look out of place to remain on the bench for quite a while

I’ve been on the bench with J1 for about 3 months. I was worried that because I couldn’t find another project, I would get laid off so I found J2, which pays more, is very meeting heavy, but I really like. I’ve kept J1 because I’m still on the bench doing absolutely nothing and getting paid. Thinking about looking for a role on a project with J1 that’s not along my career path but will allow for me to do work with no calls so that I can manage both jobs. Does anyone have experience or advice?

like

I really want to get a second job but I am scared of losing my current one. Both companies are in same field, although not direct competitors so I know it’s technically “not allowed” however, this is the only way for me to get that $$ since I am not paid all that well.

Of course I won’t tell a single friend/coworker. Only my partner. And I don’t post work stuff on social media.

Realistically what are the ODDS of being caught? Is there a legal/HR process with which they could find out??
