Which would you choose:stay at current 30 attorney firm for $145k base +10% origination bonus(10K-15k/year). 1800 hrs/yr. Or move to a 5 attorney firm for $180K+10% origination bonus.1400 hrs/yr. Been at current firm 5 yrs and in serious consideration for equity partner ($200K to $400K/yr). The new firm will consider making me equity partner, but nothing guaranteed. 11 years exp, doing construction and real estate lit now, new firm would be all construction lit, which is what I want to do.

Christ 11yoe making $145k? You should’ve left 8 years ago. $180k base is also too low for 11yoe but at least it’s only for 1400hrs. For reference, I make $225k base as a 6th year (25% bonus) and I work 9-5 (if that), no billables. I had a 2.8GPA from a mid tier school… It always baffles me that attorneys stay at jobs like this for so long but I’d definitely go elsewhere.

OP here - my job title should say senior attorney.

When will you know for equity partner

At current firm, equity partner is pretty much dependent on meeting certain metrics - origination, hours, receipts, etc. Getting closer with those numbers, but it still feels a ways away.

Last associates committee meeting is coming up. Partners have asked each associate to come up with... not one... but FIVE marketing ideas. Other than reeling out “we offer competitive pay” in job postings, what are some good ones your firm does?

Transactional associate. Lateraled 6 months ago and one of the biggest pain points has been my new firm’s inclination to “hop on a call”, which of course requires every single stakeholder to join. The end result being every call has 25 people on it and nothing actually gets done because no one wants to ask a question that could come off as silly. It’s destroying my ability to get anything done during the day. It’s a complete performance and it drives me nuts.
