Strive to always do your best and build up a rapport with a senior or manager so that you can ask for feedback to see if you should be doing anything differently. Knowing where I stand and how I'm doing helps me tie my career confidence to my actual performance vs perceived belonging. Hopefully this helps you too
I’ve been in your shoes - what helped me is knowing that most people aren’t any smarter or more capable than you. If possible, find a women’s / black / whatever minority you belong to network at your firm and build a support group, it helps. You’ve got this.
I am a double minority (female and Asian) so I think I can relate - I have been dealing with these feelings and a fish out of the water for 18+ years of my career. You will also learn to realize that most of what you’re feeling is mostly self-inflicted, and likely have nothing to do you being a minority (but more likely to do with your own personal expectations). I don’t think there’s any perfect answers to help you overcome - but know that you’re not the only one (whether you’re a minority or not) experiencing imposter syndrome. What’s helped me along the way is reflecting on my own professional and personal accomplishments. Think positive. You got to where you are today not because you’re a fraud. You’re a rockstar just like everyone else.
It’s hard I really feel ya, but always remember you’re there for a reason. If they didn’t think you could do it, trust me you wouldn’t be there. Grind it out, prove to yourself and everyone else that you belong. Unfortunately you are not only representing yourself but your entire minority group as well.
I’m currently reading “The Imposter Cure” by Dr. Jessamy Hibbard and it’s given me some good tools and things to think about when I start feeling like an imposter. Would recommend.
Just focus on your job and concentrate on your duties. Be friendly to others and open to others. I'm also a POC. I've been in your shoes most of my life.
There is no such thing as “minority in finance.” It’s all in your head! Our team has Indians, Japanese, African-American, Argentinian, Ghanese, Colombians, Bulgarian, English from England, Venezuelan, and a bunch of white guys. None of them feel a “minority.” It’s based on merit and merit only. No one cares if you are a woman, black, or dual-sex as long as you perform on the job.
lmao the “Ghanese” prefer being called Ghanaians. And I’m a Ghanaian in finance and have been the minority of any group i’ve worked in for 10 years now, dunno why you’re acting like the industry is soooo diverse when it isn’t.
