Advice Request: Started my career litigating. Switched to niche transactions (so about half and half at this point). Halfway through a year long sabbatical and reevaluating what I want to do (left before jumping to Senior associate). I’d like to get into litigation again in a practice group I don’t have experience in. Any suggestions on how to do this? How to approach firms and partners etc? Past 2 firms on my resume are top 30.

I second working with an experienced recruiter and would also suggest networking in the desired area as much as you can - the smart answer is going to change depending on what the desired litigation practice group is. Shareholder lit/Antitrust lit/lit-focused Privacy would probably all have very different answers here. You may get better help if you divulge that, if you feel you can.

Thanks. I’m looking at white collar / special investigations. Something I wanted to do, but my career took me elsewhere.

You may need to connect with an experienced recruiter

like

Thanks! I’ll def put that on my list.

Omg are you me? Same boat same boat! Except the fact that my previous firms are nowhere near top tier.. but I managed to get some decent offers (to me anyways) and one at a national firm

funny

I was sending resumes and a couple recruiters approached. But honestly the offers I got are not through recruiters.. they don’t have anything I am interested in. Also I worked on a case with a partner from another firm. We had a great relationship (so I think anyways) so she shared my resume to her firm at my city

uplifting

I'd get into personal injury. May take a few years but pays pretty well if you like litigation. Sky is the limit. Let me know if you need any references I have a lot of friends in the space.

Anyone out there who left their previous job for a new one have any advice or life experience to share? I’ve been thinking about it for months but currently feel comfortable in my job/the products I work on. I’d say I have a great work/life balance but I do know that I could be making 20-30% more and have better benefits if I left. I also feel a bit stagnant in my job but the job security has kept me put. Would love to hear if leaving a comfortable job for more money is always worth it.

What could be the reasons? What should I do now?

Negotiating a settlement. I’m at $10k, opposing counsel is at $20k. My client won’t go higher than $15k. OC has come down to 17.5k and says his client won’t budge from that. (I’m a first year, first time negotiating a settlement on my own and I don’t want to screw this up!)
