Why is every wellness initiative just a Band-Aid for burnout? I once worked somewhere that handed out branded water bottles during Mental Health Awareness Month, then scheduled 7am “optional” wellness workshops and refused to approve anyone’s PTO. Another job gave us a mindfulness app subscription but ignored all feedback about excessive workload and toxic managers. I don’t need a meditation reminder. I need leadership that doesn’t cause the burnout in the first place. Has anyone actually seen a wellness program that made things better?

Took my first ever sick day today on account of my very poor and worsening mental health. Just could not bring myself to put in another 14 hour day with back to back meetings and constant activity. Felt very guilty but I honestly wish I could be more honest and actually share with my manager about why I took a day off.
