I never really thought about that. You're right though, all the higher paying roles seem to be in management. I guess that's just a retail thing? Like there aren't many other things you can do in it that aren't still hands on in some way, and hands on = dealing with people in some capacity.
No , when you are successful at your job they figure that you can train people to do the same thing. Plus most of the time it’s the people who have “Big Mouths” who don’t mind telling people what to do even if they can’t do the job halfway themselves. That’s the thing that I get frustrated with— that and control freaks over every little detail.
There’s a book about it ‘the Peter principle’ that recognises when people are really good at their job they get promoted which moves them away from what they’re really good at and eventually into something they hate or can’t do . It doesn’t make sense does it , some companies recognise this and practice ‘horizontal promotion’ instead but in retail I suppose there just aren’t that many positions or funds available for this ? Seems a shame not to value those people who are good at what they do

This is the problem with low pay. Society needs people to do certain jobs. McDonalds shouldn't pay well because it's just for high school students? Then why is it open during school hours, and overnight? Someone has to make the food, pick the food, pick up the wasted food and food wrappers, and so many other jobs. (Daycare and home health care are some of the worst paying jobs in society, but we value children and think the elderly should have a respectful quality of life) If you are good at a job, you should be able to make a liveable wage, and not be pressured to do more. Because if you are doing more, who does your job?
I wish there were more ways to move up. I see people in leadership who have no business being there, but that was the only option for them to be promoted.
Why behind-the-scenes roles aren’t advised is beyond me. I assume there is an assumption that people leadership is just the goal for most.
