Both calls were for my wife. I’m a guy.
Phone rings. Jersey area code, probably a cell. No name on the screen.
I answered the phone and said hello, and the recruiter was confused.
Her: “Um ... Is this the right number for [wife]?”
Me: “Yes. I can take a message for her.”
Her: “Just tell her to call me when she can.”
.... long pause ....
Me: “I’d be happy to tell her, but you haven’t told me your name.”
Her (dumbfounded): “Oh right! Sorry...”
Second call. Caller ID says unknown number.
I answered with a hello. I have a deep voice.
Recruiter guy responds: “Is this [wife’s name]?” (Mind you, my wife’s name is clearly a woman’s name.)
Me: “Uh no (cough). I’m not [wife]. I can take a message for her.”
Him: “What?”
Me: “This is a landline. We both use this phone.”
Him: “Oh OK, my name is [Blah] tell her I found her resume online and to call me back.”
Me: “Sure!”
Him: “OK great thank you.” (in a manner that sounded like he was about to hang up.)
Me: “Wait! You have to tell me your phone number.”
Him (dumbfounded): “Oh right! Sorry...”
This is hilarious. I never would have thought of this. Great example of how quickly things change...
I once witnessed a junior trying to dial on an office phone. This wasn’t the kind where you had to press 9 to dial out, it worked like a normal phone. Well, it wouldn’t work for her. Turned out she didn’t know you were supposed to dial a “1” before the area code.
