Renegotiating my contract and curious about maternity leave policies at other practices/hospitals. Do you get paid leave? If so how much time off & are you getting full pay? We are a group of about 75 employees, 6 docs with 5 PA’s and only unpaid 12 weeks off.

I live in California which I've heard has amongst the more generous maternity leaves. I had 4 weeks prior to due date and then 6 weeks of "disability leave" postpartum (8 weeks if it had been a c/s) followed by 12 weeks of "family bonding" leave. The 10 weeks of disability are paid by state at 65% your salary (but capped at a certain amount) + our organization had supplemental coverage which gave some too. The remaining 8 of 12 weeks of family bonding are paid by state (the last 4 weeks were unpaid)

You can also tack on your extended sick days (we had tonuse those) and any PTO you want- these are paid full.

I do know others in CA who's employer did not grant all the above. The state will allow up to certain amount but its up to the employer. I would reccomend seeing what your state grants and then try to negotiate with your employer accordingly.

I graduate this May with an BS in Industrial Engineering. Would it be super crazy to just take off 6 months and try to start working in January 2022? 3 semesters of back-to-back online college has completely drained me and I really just want to take some time off before I start working the rest of my life. Would this hurt my chances at getting a job later? I know I'll need to explain the gap in my resume but I don't think it would be an issue. Curious for professionals' opinions. Thanks!

Single women in STEM, do you have to field questions about being single during the holidays like I do? I'm 27, and every single Christmas my mother or grandmother ask me if I've "met any nice boys" and "when I'm planning to make time for a family." I get that they're coming from a good place, but I'd love for them to ask me about my work and how fulfilling that is instead. Tips for (kindly) getting family off your back?
