I bill around 2000 and work from home. On most days I work from 9-6:30 with a break at 2-2:30 to pick up my kids from school. There’s a couple of days each month where a deal is closing and I’m pulling 12 hour days, but I always have time to pick up my kids. If I’m running low on hours I’ll throw in a few after they go to bed at 8, or I’ll work a few on a Saturday while my husband is at work and the kids are home with me. My kids are also older (7 and 9) so it works out well. When they were younger I just picked them up from daycare at 6.
I have a very similar schedule and kids a similar age. 8:30-6 are my working hours, fully remote litigation AmLaw50. My spouse handles school pickup and dropoff.
I work 9:30-5:30, then again 7:30-midnight or so. The rest of the time I’m with my baby. I have 2 WFH days a week and live 15mins from the office which makes this much easier.
On weekends when I have to work, I work during baby’s naps and after he goes to bed.
We don’t have a billable requirement but I probably do 2000 hours or so a year typically. It’s just about enforcing your boundaries (clearly I am bad at it).
Not burnt out per se, but my current pace doesn’t feel sustainable long-term for me. I haven’t been able to do anything but work and enjoy precious little time with my baby in months (no gym, cooking, manicures, socializing — and I am not exaggerating). I still feel behind on my workload.
My goal is to get to what you are describing (no work past 10, no weekend work), but if I push back I am told everyone else is busy and to suck it up 🤷🏻♀️
I am an 8th year at a V20 firm FWIW, about to make counsel.
I bill 1800 and have a hybrid schedule 3 days a week with a 45 min commute each way. It doesn’t feel sustainable at all to me. The commute and getting ready adds 3 non-billable hours to the day. I’m with my 16 month old from 6:30 AM to 7, then get ready, in the office by 8:30, work till 5 PM, with daughter until bedtime and then log on again for an hour or 2. Then plan meals.. etc. it’s too much!
Work 6:30 am-5:30 pm plus a couple hours on the weekend. Usually eat lunch at my desk. I bill 2000+.
I work evenings if something comes up. I check email on my phone and respond if needed.
