I think that is an example of why/how posting lesson plans and assignments for the entire year, at the beginning of the year, is not realistic.
An outline of units and planned topics? Great. But everything can't be anticipated.
I’m so glad our district doesn’t make us do the entire year. We have our roadmap that parents can look at see when we will teach each topic, but so much stuff changes that it would be nigh impossible for lesson plans done in advance. And even our roadmap isn’t accurate with random counselor visits, testing etc.

A child noticed the moon during the day and asked why it was only half a moon. I explained that the moon is still there and how the moon has cycles!

Well, my kids unexpectedly got into a religious conversation. I know some teachers would have shut it down, but I let them talk for a few minutes and then they moved on to a different topic. They were just sitting around and drawing and coloring, and something someone drew spurred the conversation. I was slightly amused at the way it evolved

Same! Some of our teachers would have shut it down immediately, but they let them talk about everything else

I love those moments. It opens up so many opportunities for talking and learning something new.

I am sure teaching middle school opens a lot more opportunities for spontaneous conversations. In preschool we focus more on manners, kindness etc🙂
Two times that truly stick out:
1. They asked me how credit card debt worked. Since I had gotten myself into some cc debt a while ago, I got to explain it with my own real-world examples. So many of them thanked me for pushing aside English for the real world.
2. When I returned after breast cancer treatment, every class wanted to ask questions about my family, chemo, surgery, etc. We took 45 minutes out of every class to discuss everything (with one or two “No, we’re not going theres”). They were so respectful. After, in addition to the thank yous, it was a bit sad to hear several kids say that their mom/aunt/relative had breast cancer but no one would talk to them about it. Probably my most moving day as a teacher.

Wow. Those are such powerful topics. Those children are lucky to have you. My daughter was just diagnosed with breast cancer. Ty for sharing. It gives me hope❤️
