What's wrong with them recruiting you hard? Good mid-levels are hard to find. It's not about having a book, it's about having the skills to do the work they need done without their needing to train/supervise.

Yes. I don't like it. They sound desperate for top talent and want to know who their competition is if someone else is willing to m pay more. If you'd accept the other offer they would ultimately find out who it was.
It's a red flag to me in so much as it will reflect on the partner you're working for or the office managing partner. I'd like to imagine that it's not just the HR department on their own volition asking these questions.
What created the opening at that firm? What is the tenure or associates? What is the ratio of associates to partners at the firm. I'd consider the foregoing questions when you contemplate accepting.
