40 yr old with PE background (10 yrs), McK (5 yrs). Been trying to make in roads with tech biz ops type roles, but have no prior big tech experience. Finding it tough. Also anecdotally feels like "consulting" is being looked down on at the moment and am having to reframe my experience as operator and someone who actually "does stuff".

For biz ops you just need to have advanced SQL/Excel or even better with Python. Getting into big tech is not easy, lots of good luck since the resume screening is kinda random. I have more invites from startups for strat ops and biz ops but the pay is 💩 while the asks are too much

Dont really need to know advanced sql or python these days with gpt, as long as you know your company’s databases you are good

Tech experience is valued in tech so it’s going to be a very uphill battle to switch this late in your career and come in at the salary level (I assume) you’re targeting

The market has tangibly shifted. Consulting experience is being discounted. Earlier (even before the post pandemic hiring boom) you could use post consulting exit to pivot to a wide range of fields and big tech would welcome you with open arms. not happening now. Truly unfortunate, and huge reduction to the consulting value prop. Not that we can do anything about it now, but college and MBA grads considering a consulting career should be warned.

Does anyone run a business in addition to their firm? I’m a solo and I’m doing pretty well with about 60-70 billable hours a month. Though that leaves a lot of downtime. I finished my MSN LM to maybe stand out from the large amount of applicants they get. BUT I have no experience in analytics.. so I have a chance?
