I suspect everyone will have quite different answers, as we aren’t just one ubiquitous entity! I will answer on my behalf though, and note not all of these need to be met:
- P&L responsibility - this is the holy grail (for more senior consultants)
- For strategy roles, a strategy team that has genuine sway and influence in the organisation as opposed to mercenaries for hire doing the bidding of BU heads
- Higher or at least equal rem, although this becomes hard at Manager+ level as consulting pays much better at senior levels
- Direct reports, and not necessarily people in strategy roles
- Equity if it’s a startup / SME
- An industry with a relatively high degree of uncertainty, as opposed to very mature industries like telco, insurance, banking where you’ll just be a number
- Some degree of clarity on development pathway. In consulting, the path (and timelines) are very clear whilst this is pretty murky in industry
I’d like to reverse the question though and ask you: what do you look for in a consultant looking to switch to industry?
I’d guess its one of the big 4 Banks ?
Elements I look for (most of which I gleaned from consulting):
- great manager / team: unlike consulting where you’ll move in 2-3 months if you hate them, you are stuck working with them for the foreseeable future so you better like them
- interesting industry: my first foray into industry was in Travel, and since I love travel, it was so nice getting paid to keep apprised of an industry which I would do for free
- industry not destroying the world: I refuse to work for an Oil & Gas, Mining, Tobacco, etc. company, and the company’s commitment to sustainability is important to me
- interesting work: I have now found myself working as a strategist in an innovation unit of a Fortune 500 company, and it is a dream to do only growth strategy projects
- gender diversity: I have not been the token woman since I left consulting, and it’s so refreshing (especially having a female manager)
- WLB: Except for the occasional fire or massive presentation, crazy hours aren’t worth it and will only lead to burn out. This is especially prescient for me since I’m moving to Australia to be with my partner after being separated for over a year due to COVID border closures, so I want a strategic role where I can spend time with him and our future kids.
Considering I’m kicking off a job search in Australia now that my visa with full work rights have been granted, my dream role is working in a strategic capacity for a startup that I’m passionate about and is on the cusp of international expansion — I’m well suited for the first 2 Aussie expansion markets as a US citizen and a UK MBA. My second choice would be something like my current role focusing on innovation strategy for a large corporate (focusing on helping a giant behemoth learn new tricks), or moving to do strategy for a tech company (helping a company on the cutting edge do better).
If you are hiring please let me know. Your job title sounds super interesting.
Thanks C1.
I am actually going to kick off the hiring process for my innovation function.
