I wouldn't worry about that. Unless they have legal grounds to challenge it with labor authorities or an employment lawyer, that's not a possibility at all.
They absolutely can’t cut your pay. If he’s not making as much, it might push the company to do a market adjustment. But don’t take it personally. And if someone DOES retaliate, that’s illegal and you can bring it to HR.
They cannot cut your pay. People make different amounts for a variety of reasons, including, but not limited to experience, tenure, need and labor. This is why most companies encourage not discussing Pay. It can cause hard feelings very quickly. .
The problem is a company can't limit you talking about pay. This is why equality and equity in the work place are so valuable. A new employee regardless of their status or experience should never make more than an employee who has been working for a business longer (equity). Thats why a lot of company's start everyone off at the same amount to maintain equality. That shows a real inconsideration for the ones who have been there and proving themselves loyal. However, he could just be a bad employee and missed all his targets and evals and thats why the op makes more. I mean determination, dedication, and initiative matter to.
Him getting upset is what's supposed to happen. But if they cut your pay because he is mad that is a violation of The Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA). Which has a whole section about pay disparity. The point of the Act (other than setting standards for pay and labor) is to establish protections for employees. Such as over time pay, pto, sick days, and raises/talking about wages. Only people who can't discuss pay are manager who can see the pay of others. But this was established so you could have that conversation with him and he can get what he deserves or find better employment elsewhere. But in this job environment I wouldn't leave. I'd just find a way for them to either give me a raise or pay me unemployment.
