How do you manage keeping track of and responding to teams chats and emails in a timely manner? I have a hard time addressing chats when I am focused on something else, because I know it will completely derail me. When your resource group is more than 5 or 6 students and they are all at different levels AND you only have them for 20 to 30 mins.....how do you make the most use of your time? How can you work towards their individual goals as well as fill in gaps in learning when there is 8 to10 students that are at different levels of learning and all require some level of assistance in order to complete even simple tasks? How do you deal with unresponsive summers? I’m a junior and overseeing my first project with summers (5 in total). Two are unresponsive and do not acknowledge my emails. Do I need to make it clear that I expect acknowledgement when I assign work? The other three don’t have a problem with this, so I’m not sure what it is.

Was interviewing with a firm and soon after receiving an offer, learned of bad culture/toxic partners in the practice group from a couple of associates who recently lateraled from the firm. I turned the offer down. A partner that I clicked with while interviewing reached out asking me why I turned down the offer. Should I be honest and relay what I heard?

Associate at an AmLaw 100 firm doing patent work. I applied to a part time masters program to try to pivot to a different technical field (still doing patent work, but in something that interests me more than what I’m doing now). Do I try to stick it out at the firm while getting the masters, ask for a reduced hours schedule, or get a part time, non-legal job so I can focus more on the program (one year).

Random partner asked a litigation-related question to a partner I frequently work with (i’m a transactional associate). My partner cc’d me and said for me to briefly look. Asked the library. They got me a great case. Sent it back. Now the random partner is asking for more cases in another circuit.

I haven’t done caselaw research since 1L and this isn’t even my practice… wtf do I do (I am fully utilized in my normal work and have a few deals closing soon…)

Does your firm give you anything if you bill over 200 hours? I hear some firms give gift cards (although best is not billing 200 hours and not getting a gift card, just curious).
