All of these stories about rescinded offers are terrifying. When is the right time to give your job notice? I'm starting as a state contractor next month. I've signed the offer letter with the vendor that states my start date. Am I good to quit, or should I wait until closer to the start date? I'm so scared of leaving myself stranded without a job!

Depends on your personal situation. If you have enough in savings to cover a resended offer and are comfortable put in your two weeks. If not, for me personally, I'd work until 3 weeks out putting as much of every paycheck away as possible before leaving. In that brief window I would casually apply to other positions of interest just in case, and I'd enjoy some time off. Easy to say no longer interested to positions after being onboarded, and a comforting safety net to see companies show interest during the limbo period.

Usually those stories of offers being pulled relate to some issue such as a background check being problematic. If you're sure you've cleared all that, I wouldn't worry too much. It's good to give two weeks notice at a current job, just so you don't burn any bridges. But if you think nothing will pop up to derail the new job, perhaps you should just put in your notice.

Stick it out u may like it we all need jobs real good ones hard to find I got luck I got a great job good people

If they have not put you on the payroll, then there is no timeframe to give notice. I signed my offer letter in September with expectation to start on 12/16. Unfortunately they will not put me on the payroll until I have a cleared EOD. As my clearance is granted inside my file, my front page shows interim higher level as I'm still being adjudicated, but I am confirmed to have the base clearance for the contract.

I cannot sit by unpaid so I'm seeking other work, and if I land something that meets my needs, I'll be sending notice. I was in this situation 12 years ago, so I'm firm. "No pay, no loyalty".

Find a calm moment to read your contract carefully and decipher the legalese. Many agencies at whatever level, are required to give at least a 30 day notice. Try not to give too much energy to the fear and have a plan. Your skills are valuable and you will be liked by someone.
