An appropriate post for the weekend - I’ve been doing this 10 years and lately I find myself paralyzed by stress and worry. When I’m out of the office I can’t seem to let the worry go, I can’t really go out or enjoy things because I always feel like I’m waiting for some unexpected blowback or emergency or disaster. I feel like I’m always just holding very still hoping something horrible doesn’t happen on my cases. Do you all have any tips for like….enjoying life outside of “work hours?”

You worry about the unknown. So make it know.

What are the various things that COULD happen? Write them down and get them out of your head. Pressure not fully relieved? Ok, what steps would you take if any of those scenarios came to pass? Now rank the scenarios in order of likeliness. Take some defensive measures against the items most likely to occur.

You don’t need a perfect plan for every contingency. You just need to have faith in your competency to call an audible and execute.

Last associates committee meeting is coming up. Partners have asked each associate to come up with... not one... but FIVE marketing ideas. Other than reeling out “we offer competitive pay” in job postings, what are some good ones your firm does?

I have a partner that calls me multiple times a day to talk about updates on our cases. Sometimes just to ask “anything to update me on?” He’s known across all of the associates for doing this. Most of the calls repeat information I’ve already provided in emails to him or the client. I normally bill this time as “strategize on” or “consider XYZ in further of” and it keeps getting appealed. Any advice?

Negotiating a settlement. I’m at $10k, opposing counsel is at $20k. My client won’t go higher than $15k. OC has come down to 17.5k and says his client won’t budge from that. Do I offer 12.5k so we can hopefully meet in the middle at 15k? Is that how the settlement game is played? Seems dumb we can’t just say let’s meet in the middle now and be done with this. (I’m a first year, first time negotiating a settlement on my own and I don’t want to screw this up!)

Hi new here. Idk what my value is and if I’m getting paid an amount that reflects my hard work. I am a paralegal for a small law firm (family and immigration) w only 1 attorney. I feel like it’s very unstructured and one of the managers micromanages. It’s like every man for himself. Take home pay is $50k. I am working on my bachelors deg. Do I get paid enough?

What’s the best way to turn down a 2nd interview? During the 1st interview, I learned that the compensation for the role is not within the range that I am looking for and requires 400 more billable hours a year than what I bill now.
