How do I be a decent manager to a coworker who's upset I've been promoted twice in two years and they haven't? We started out as coworkers, became decent friends after a few good moments, but went back to simply coworkers after they flubbed a few projects and I had to step in to clean up. I'm non-confrontational but year-end reviews are right around the corner and I'm worried about having to act professional to someone who I got too close with and who now hates me.

Do firms typically share closing binders on M&A deals? Putting one together and an associate on the other side offered to share theirs whenever I asked for a particular document that I was missing. Is it an insult that I had to get them to give me theirs?

Has anyone had a manager they just don’t vibe with/relate to? I’ve been trying to connect but I haven’t gotten them on my side yet. How did you manage to crack the ice?

Networking question here. A retired partner at the firm I used to work out reached out to me recently about attending an afternoon during the week (b4 4/30) with one of his long time clients. The partner and I have kept in touch since I joined my new firm and I feel like his invitation is a great networking opportunity since the client (who I have worked with before) is on a number of boards. Torn as how to request off as an S3. Could materialize to nothing but could be good for reconnecting.

My boss in my creative agency threatened to fire me because I, a male, came into work with my nails painted. HR is having a very complicated day today as I found out I could take legal action if he does fire me since we don't have an established dress code that has any guidelines against male nail polish wearing.

My manager got hired with 0 actual sales experience, comes from operations and marketing. It’s impossible to take any of his advice seriously, he ends team meetings and messages with “always be closing”. Like tf you know about closing, go back to making your PowerPoints.

Single black female. Late 30s, no kids. Is it better to practice in a smaller market that’s close to major cities, lots of professional opportunities, but no real single professional scene? OR be in a bigger pond/major city with more professional and networking opportunities, oversaturated with lawyers of color, more competition for professional opportunities, but bigger dating pool?

I met two of my three aides for the first time today and they have been nothing but miserable the entire day. How could I promote a more positive environment without directly calling them out?

Question. I am a female POC. I’m curious what non-poc think about black women who wear hair colors other than natural black-brown in the workplace? I’m not talking about outlandish colors like pink, blue, green etc… The hair colors I’m referring to are like honey blonde ombré or balayage and the current trendy copper color. Thoughts?

I spoke to a EY Recruiter today. She asked for my range for a manager role on the Federal side. I said 150-175 base. The role is in DC. She informed me that is more in the SM range and she would reach out if there was a SM opportunity she had available. I’ve been in industry for more than 10 years. I didn’t think 150-175 base was too high for a manager role with Big 4 in DC. I make close to these figures now. Am I going to take a pay cut coming from industry to consulting?

For the NJ folks who work in NYC - my potential new employer has offices in both NJ and NYC. The NJ office is a 1.5 hour drive vs. NYC ~40 min commute via train. Still very much hybrid work arrangement. Given the option, which office would you prefer to be based out of and why? Mostly asking from a tax perspective. While I believe it’ll even out when filing, I’d be paying state tax in both states throughout the year, right?

My yoe is 3.6, but the interview is scheduled role "Application lead project". Is this normal?

I recently had a specialist partner send me a fairly nasty email after I (a transactional first year) was told to ask them to review something ASAP that had clearly been on my partner’s radar for over a week. Why am I taking the (honestly justified) blame for this? Surely it should be obvious that I’m just the messenger here.
