At exactly what point did parents stop monitoring their kids?!
I guess I would compare it to a journal or diary for the parents. Or maybe even a scrapbook. If a student has a diary or scrapbook they sometimes bring to school and sometimes share content with their friends, it’s not my job to police it. That’s their personal property. If a parent has issues with what the student is writing, sharing, or including in this diary or scrapbook, it’s the parent’s responsibility. I can ask them to put it away during class time, but I have no right (and no desire) to look in it.
Wait, so the parent was mad at you for the student being on Instagram? I would agree that that is well outside of your job range. Did anyone come in to back you up?
In middle school? Is the kid in question even old enough to meet the terms of service to use Instagram or did they lie?
Unless you gave an assignment requiring a kid to get on Instagram, this seems like a parent) child issue.
That's crazy. If parents want us to do extra, then they need to pay us extra. Even if we don't get paid the amount of compensation we deserve, we still go beyond the scope of our duties. Now they want us to be their children's social media manager?
I figure that's the cost of being able to deduct them on your taxes.
Let them know about any resources the school offers to help students navigate social media. This could be anti-bullying programs, digital citizenship lessons, or even parent workshops. You can say, "Our school counselor offers some great resources on social media safety. Perhaps we can connect you after the conference?"
