I don't consider myself as a homesteader, but I certainly have done a lot of what you mention. We have 10 acres, and have, over the years, created a large garden with raised beds. We grow a lot more food than we eat, so I give it away, and freeze or can some for the winter months. (There's nothing like defrosting tomatoes in February - smells like summer!)
Some of my friends have chickens, but you have to practically build Fort Knox to keep the predators out. I would cry every time one was killed.
We rarely eat out, and have used the internet to learn to cook all sorts of interesting things.
Whatever it is, start small and don't get discouraged when things don't turn out the way you had hoped. I remember my first garden of 3 rows, watching as the plants disappeared one-by-one - as a gopher pulled the plants under the ground.

That is inspirational to me.

I do container gardening. I'm planning for next year to have more plants in the ground because they seem to do better.

I LOVE bread baking! I have wanted to do a garden but haven't yet!

I always say I want to do the sourdough bread thing, but honestly I don't think I would stick with it.
I want to, but having the time to start is a problem for me. 😞

That is the hardest part for me too
I don’t consider myself a homesteader, but I make my own bread, grow what food I can in my area, can what I grow (that we don’t eat daily), raise my own beef, and raise chickens and quail for eggs. I want bees but don’t know where to start. When I was a kid my parents had milk cows so I want one for myself, just don’t have the time right now but maybe in a few years when I retire.
Chickens are interesting animals. We are hatching 24 eggs right now in an incubator. My kids love it. We have allowed some quail and chickens to hatch out their own babies outside but we have too many predators so inside is safer. We just hatched out 7 quail.

I am not a homestead because I am too busy and my husband and daughter are not onboard for all the extra work. But I do dabble in gardening.

Gardening is so rewarding imo

Right now with the way things are going in my yard and garden, I am so happy I am not depending on it for food. Between the squirrels tearing stuff up and the squash bugs, I am about done!
