Lots of great recommendations here already, but I’d suggest to do what my partner and I did; we attended every session possible and we are so glad that we did. W2, F4, F3, F1 practices, and more! It was a long day, but worth getting there early anyway. Also, pack a small umbrella for shade, ours was used for many hours each day.
How fun! It’s extremely busy - expect traffic! Would discourage ubering to the track if possible for you. Should book your accommodations ASAP if you haven’t already. I can give general recommendations for the city, but honestly we’ve been ready for bed at the end of each day at the track. If you’re GA get there early and get a good spot on turn 1 for the start, it’s a big hill so the view is cool, and good walking shoes! Track is pretty long so walking all the way around it you’ll get your steps in
Go to the lucha libre shows between turns 6/7, solid margaritas, Mexican food, and wrestling between sessions. The BBQ area between 3/4 and 15/16 if you’re looking for some Texan flavors. Just be warned, it’s hot as sh*t out here, even in October, so as fun as it may sound to walk the whole track, it can be rough.
Use the shuttle. Pack sunscreen. Cosmic coffee and beer garden will be popping in the AM.
Sunscreen for sure. It gets sunny!!!
Stay at the Aloft downtown which is walking distance to 6th and to the shuttle which is a must, traffic is awful.
My opinion is probably in the minority but I enjoy just getting good tickets for Friday to watch the practices and then walk around COTA to drink and listen to the V8/V10 vintage cars with real engines. That is enjoyable, it's easy to visit the tents and attractions, and it is not overly crowded. I have not been going to the Saturday sessions lately because it is far too crowded. If you've seen FP1/2 you don't need to see 3 and I watch quali at a bar downtown which is fun.
Race day is fun but I have probably reached my limit of sitting in super packed grandstands for 3 hours. My personal opinion is that the best grandstands are at the end of the back straight but when I go again in the future I will be strongly considering box/club seats.
^agreed, just asking to get mugged or shot the way it’s going currently
If have GA the grass area between 15-17 is pretty good on race day if you get there early
Thanks all, I have 3 day GA and look forward to the racing action
