Yes it's really unfortunate. The mortality rate for black women is significantly higher than any other race group in America for this reason. Healthcare professionals routinely ignore concerns of black mothers. I always call it out when it happens to me.
Not me personally but my mother. She had a horrible experience at a local hospital, I'm usually so apprehensive about calling the race card when something happens but she was blatantly ignored for every other white patient, even those who had arrived a lot later than her. When she saw someone they were rushed and ignored both her words and her physical symptoms, and told her "well I'm sure you're strong enough to get through it, as a Black woman." She COULD have meant that since Black women go through so much my mother should have no problem healing, but since she didn't give her any advice other than that it felt pretty dismissive. The strong Black woman trope is literally a killer. Saddest part is the dismissive doctor wasn't even white, she was Latina. :/
Thankfully this has not happened to me. I know a couple friends who this has happened to though. It makes me really sad to think that this kind of stuff goes on.
It's really unfortunate and heartbreaking to know that this is a normal and sometimes even regular experience for us. I'm still have high hopes that there will come a time when we don't have to experience it anymore, but at what expense?
Not that I know of, but I've heard of far too many anecdotes of others so I think it's unfortunately more common than we think it is
I am really sorry you had to deal with this, OP! That is just awful. To feeling sick on your hospital bed all while being discriminated is just awful. I can only imagine how you felt. I really hope this doesn't happen to anybody else. Tight hugs to you!
I have been dismissed by my own family doctor concerning my risk for Diabetes- he basically had a sentiment of why worry you gonna get it anyway 🤷 no education no assurance just disgraceful- I also work in healthcare and know how despicable this is
