I think the research required to investigate whether a job is a ghost job or not would take more effort than applying for the ghost job. I really hate how common they are becoming.
I'm not sure there's any surefire way to tell. But one thing to look for would be if the job description just seems unrealistic, like a grab bag of qualifications that no actual human would possess. Sometimes the listings look cut and pasted, and it's as if they're not really serious about finding someone. It's also good to check the company's own site and see if they're posting the job there, or if it's something they're just putting on LinkedIn or wherever to make them look more prosperous than they are.
Look out for length of time the job has been posted. A history of the same job with slightly different text being posted and reposted. Too good to be true attributes like high salary for entry level. Too broad a list of responsibilities like a job that should require two or even three people to do all the work. An outrageous list of education requirements versus the actual role (like BS in computer science to test games, etc). Or just too broad a job listing entirely. Those are the warning signs I look for.
