Anyone hit a career rut? And how did you get out of it. I’m in year 12 of practice and I had a great run loved tax and now I’m just feeling my passion completely dissipate. I’m considering getting a career coach or the like. Any suggestions ate welcome.

I’ve been in the same place a couple of times in my career. Remote work during Covid, and now hybrid work, completely saved my tax career.

What do you think is driving this rut? Are you truly losing interest in tax, or is it some other factor, like the hours? The clients? If it’s a factor like hours, is there a way to mitigate it? I’m really sorry you are going through this and I hope you can pull through.

helpful

Thanks @kpmg! I’m honestly not sure. Hours contribute but I think it’s partly that I’m not finding my place. I’ve been at big4, law firms, regional accounting firms, and now I’m in a remote role at a law firm. I’ve learned a lot in each firm, gotten promotions, and the pay increases have put me in a really good spot. But I’m not feeling some sense of fulfillment or connection with my teams. I constantly have this grass is always greener thoughts. I also think the industry can be a little toxic, a lot of my co workers are constantly complaining, it’s “who has the worst client”, “who has the worst boss”, “most work in a week”. On and on.

like

Wow, so much of what you said resonates with me. I too have tried Big 4, a regional accounting firm, a law firm, and then back to Big 4. Each place has some element of toxicity and for me it primarily has been coworkers and the types of behavior you are describing. I guess the remote element somehow helps me block it out mentally. Throughout my career my love of tax has never waned, but I totally understand the burnout from dealing with the toxicity involved in working at a firm. I have wondered if an environment with better overall work life balance might be less toxic, like the IRS or in house in industry, but I have yet to make a jump to one of those.

like

So funny! I’ve recently had the same thoughts and started applying to IRS. I wasn’t able to get an interview (or a response even). I’m probably better off because I would have to take a large pay cut. Thanks for commiserating with me!

Becoming a manger in my current company/path will probably get me there in terms of TC. Also considering EMBA from a good school (Wharton Global, Duke, Kellogg, Booth).
