Well, I believe that being an adult with ADHD and being a Tax Lawyer is not the best combination - currently, I feel exhausted

Another ADHD tax lawyer here! Constantly exhausted.

like

same!

My life, especially since I do m&a and it hasn’t slowed down. Soon as I think there’s a break coming I get asked about 10 more deals.

like

Same but I find it makes me a better tax lawyer especially as a strategist. I didn't fare so well though before being able to hire support staff to do the more detail oriented and repetitive work.

like

Atypical hiring. You're hiring for your weaknesses and folks with high EQ who can run the details for you and keep your work on track. You prob start with an assistant, someone who manages you.

Guys me too!

ADHD rising 3L going into tax law! any and all help/tips/suggestions so so appreciated!

Stay away from compliance/controversy/repetitive roles or work. Tax planning and big picture things where others keep up with details and deadlines likely best. Look for integrated tax roles.

Anyone here have comorbid anxiety and/or depression? How did you know, and how do you manage it now? I think I might be struggling with one or both and I’m trying to figure out how to proceed. Not currently seeing a therapist or medicated, managing based on strategies I learned from an ADHD coach back in college, so at minimum I would need to find a provider, which has been a barrier (cost-wise, finding someone with experience with ADHD, etc.)

I’ve been struggling with finding the right antidepressant. I started a few months ago but had really bad side effects and stopped (headaches, lethargy, nausea, inability to concentrate). The withdrawal is just as bad. I’ve noticed that I made mistakes when my mind was in a haze and just can’t seem to work. I think I need to find an antidepressant that works for me but I’m nervous it’s going to make work that much harder. Do I tell someone at my firm? If so, how?

How am I expected to bill 1900 hours when I only have 8 cases and when I ask for work no one responds. I even asked the partner in person for work and he said he was slow and didn’t have anything for me.This month I’ve only billed 80 hrs. Its making me anxious because I don’t want to get fired for low hours but also I’m a first year so will they have some mercy on me? Lol

Transitioning from com. lit into tax controversy?

I have a tax LLM and started my career out of law school doing M&A tax at a big4. After 9 months, I got out of big4 transactional hell and into whatever litigation I could find. I now practice commercial lit but would welcome the opportunity to eventually transition into tax controversy (which I wasn’t able to do before). Does my commercial litigation “break” hurt my prospect? How long can I stay in com lit without hurting my chances even more?

Has anyone dealt with stuffing allocation in a non-hedge fund context? It seems even in the HF world the law is fuzzy in using aggregate reverse 704c principles in stuffing allocations. Like, sure, the market is there but no authority really blessed it (other than some Cravath partner’s article in Tax Notes in 2013). If we are talking asset class that isn’t really like marketable securities but might be able to treat it similarly solely by virtue of, say, valuation on a quarterly basis (contd)

When the IRS (e.g., a RO/AO/Examiner) calls or writes a letter… How do you verify that it’s really the IRS and not a scam? I’m new to tax law and I’m worried that I’m going to respond to/answer a scam and give away client info (or my own tax preparer info). I don’t think my worry is unfounded due to the tremendous amount of tax/IRS scam out there but it would be nice to hear from some of y’all so that I’m not so worried about it…
