Practicing 6 years and still working on it. Its more difficult if you dont have target for a different practice area.
Having this exact same issue having just left my DA job. Luckily found a temporary gig with a friend of a friend’s family law firm and hoping that associate experience will help me in future job searches
Canadian here, but similar North American legal market. I started as a criminal prosecutor and enjoyed the job, but the cases would darken my day and I was afraid of being pigeonholed into criminal law too. I quickly moved to a small firm, similar pay but different area of law. I moved to big law when a friend put in good word for me at the firm they worked at, again a different area of litigation but this time with big law pay. My advice would be to make the move while you're a junior and figuring things out, but balance that against the risk of employers perceiving you as a flight risk.
Yes, I had to start my own firm to do it, it is very liberating though
Was in capital markets as a 3rd year at BL. Left to do ECVC at a boutique. It was the best thing I did. My capital markets group was super niche.
I did 6 years of bankruptcy litigation. I did a total pivot into pharma in house. Best decision I’ve ever made.
