Anyone who has recently resigned from ibm? When you initiare a separation process from workday, it goes to manager for approval. I asked HR and there is a due date mentioned on that process. Does that mean that if manager does not approve before the due date, my resignation is declined? What is the impact and what is meant by that due date? IBM

This will vary based on the type of practice and even what partners you work with. No one can tell you. Theoretically lit is more predictable but emergencies and unnecessary fire drills can still happen all the time and you don’t have control over that and how busy you get during those time

What is big(ish)law?
Yeah like A1 said. Firm placed under the big law umbrella by size/revenue/amlaw standards but without that name recognition people tend to associate with the term.
Litigation is a bit more predictable than I understand transactional to be, though you don’t have control over your schedule and there are still fire drills. By that I mean- you can’t control when, for example, your summary judgment motion is due but you know in advance and can plan around important things. Emergency stuff still pops up.
Garden variety regulatory investigations can allow for slightly more control over your schedule, unless the people at the agency are being unreasonable (you can negotiate more with regulators than courts, and the government lawyers also want to enjoy their Thanksgiving or whatever).
Other types of investigations can be just as unpredictable as transactional: if, for example, the FBI shows up onsite at your client and starts poking around, that can happen without notice and become an all-consuming fire drill at inopportune times.
