My best friend is a 3rd grade teacher here (has been for 5 years) and she’s finally quitting. Apparently the return from Covid has been particularly horrendous. Mental health issues running rampant, kids aren’t performing at their grade level and parents are mad at the teachers/in denial about kids behavior… apparently the tik tok era has made behavior 1000x worse as well. They know too much/grow up too fast, but have the emotional intelligence of preschoolers with no idea how to function in public/school settings. Add that to the whole “teaching only for the standardized tests” debacle where teachers’ pay is centered around how well their students test, and it all creates a pretty toxic environment from everything I’ve been hearing. I really feel for you guys.
Just curious, what district are you in? I keep hearing a lot about this and as a parent, I have concerns about my kids education. Also from a teachers perspective, is there anything the general public and voters can do to help?
Im not ready to give up. However, I dont think the administration doesn't care. There is just so much going on. COVID, political issues, Title IX, parents being very loud, kids feeling their entitled and that the rules don't apply, state funding issues, fed funding issues, mental health issues, budget issues, staffing issues, school board issues, recession issues, the list goes on and on
I can understand your perspective - I have many family members who teach and they are similarly frustrated and burnt out. I don't really know what can be done to improve at this point
And I'm here thinking about quitting as well. I can only take so much. We don't feel supported by our distruct anymore.
