If it has the option I put one in. If it doesn’t I’m not exactly going out of my way to make one. Not sure how much weight it really does carry and not surprised that every company and hiring manager will think differently. I like to work smarter, not harder! And making a unique cover letter for every single job is a lot.
I suppose it’s a level of effort question. I find the job market is a numbers game. Are you really gonna write 250 customized to the role cover letters? Probably not.
I’ve had mixed reviews from hiring managers and HR professionals. I think it depends on the company/position (I know that doesn’t help).
So here’s a little more targeted approach:

What I think is most helpful is a personalized email or message to the poster of the job. That should be your cover letter.
VM you have plus, that’s the difference and you’re the first one to ever say so. Thank you.
I was wondering the same thing! It seems like some companies still want them, especially if you're applying to a more traditional role. But in many cases, it feels like they’re optional now, especially if the application is more straightforward. What’s your take, do you still bother with them?
I haven’t been writing them, but I’ve seen a few postings specifically say to attach resume AND a cover letter so I think only in those cases I would write one.
Why wouldn't you? The cover letter is the one chance you have to show some personality, or wit, or writing style. The real purpose of the cover letter is to include things that may not fit into the concise and dry resume format. If you don't write one you've passing up that opportunity.
I’ve just heard so many hiring managers say they “don’t even read them” so it seems like a waste of time. And even with a template & chat gpt I would still spend time customizing the cover letter to the role so….
HR doesn’t even pass them on to us at my company.
I have been told for leadership positions it’s nice to put a short deck together with an intro, why you fit the role, and 30/60/90 day plan. This was mostly for internal roles though.
