That's a subject that's going to be a huge issue in the coming year and beyond. In the US some prominent politicians are already questioning how destructive AI could be to the workforce. There are billionaires claiming people won't have to work in the future, which prompts the question of how anyone will pay rent or buy food.
Rising Star
I’ve been watching AI eat into roles that people thought were “safe” just a couple years ago with junior analysts, basic coding tasks, even some creative stuff like copywriting and graphic design. Companies are already bragging about headcount “optimization” in their earnings calls, and yeah, productivity is shooting up, but the profits mostly seem to flow straight to execs and shareholders. It feels unfair when the same tech that’s making the company way more efficient is also the reason your job feels shaky and your raise is 3% “because of market conditions.”
If a tool lets one person do the work of three, shouldn’t the remaining people either work less for the same pay or get paid more for the extra value they’re creating? Otherwise it’s just a massive wealth transfer from labor to capital.I’ve got friends in tech who survived layoffs this year only to see their workloads explode while their salaries stayed flat. One of them literally said, “I’m doing great… for the company’s margin.” It’s demoralizing.
What do you think is the most realistic way workers could actually capture some of those AI-driven gains? Stronger collective bargaining? Government mandates? Or just hopping to companies that are proactively doing the right thing? Curious what others are seeing in their industries too.
