For what it’s worth (for you and anyone else who might come across this post), the Domain area is just fine (and no I don’t live there, though I used to live a few miles south of it for a couple years.)
People love to hate on it but it’s just like everything else that’s a new-ish build in Austin - cheaply constructed “luxury” apartments built over retail.
Is it an easily walkable area with ~keep austin weird~ personality? No, but it can be a great option if your budget doesn’t allow you to be closer to downtown but you value convenience - easy access to 183 and Mopac, multiple Whole Foods and a Trader Joe’s, Tacodeli, close by the new soccer stadium if that’s your thing.
Good luck finding the place that feels right for you!
If by that you mean you want to go out (drinks, food etc) I’d say east Austin is good. You can walk to a lot of places and good for single people to meet up.
Thanks! Just any area in East Austin?
There are a lot of newer apartments on E 6th by the new Whole Foods. That’s a good central location. There are some further down too near Pedernales that look nice, by HEB’s new office. I also like the Cesar Chavez area, east of Comal, I rented a house near there a while back. There’s also rental houses in north of E 7th, just depends what you want to live in. I also wouldn’t discount the MLK or Manor Rd. areas. There’s plenty going on there too, but probably less than say E 4/5/6th streets.
What’s important to you?
East Austin is a lot of fun, plenty of restaurants a stone’s throw away, breweries, music, other single people, etc.
Zilker/Bouldin/Travis Heights are a little slower, some older families mixed with younger people, close to downtown, close to the east side still, less businesses and more of a neighborhood feel.
Hyde Park/North Loop feels similar to the neighborhoods I just listed but they’re a little closer to campus. I feel like there’s a good mix there age-wise. Great neighborhoods.
The Domain is disgusting in my opinion, it’s super north, super new and just feels gross. Lots of people who move here and don’t know where to live end up there. Hard pass for me.
Feel free to DM if you want more info and welcome to Austin! Unless of course you already live here and are just looking to move, ha.
