I’ve been in boardrooms where these conversations happen, and I always push back on this kind of framing. Layoffs are about business needs, not individual shortcomings. Leaders need to own their decisions instead of shifting blame onto employees who, just months ago, were considered top talent. If we truly value people, we need to show it.
I bet it’s intentional use of words telling the current employees that more cuts are coming. So, stay on top of your game or risk getting cut. It’s also good to note that companies like meta or google, if they stopped certain initiatives, they would let that team go. It seems that is not the case this time around and they chose to let go “low performers” instead.
That is a really strange move. I assume they'll still get plenty of candidates, as people will want the name on their resume. But it has to make people think twice about getting into a culture where you can get tossed aside with a gratuitous and unfounded insult that could impact you in the future.
I think this is corporate America to be honest but might have expected better from Meta. What a cruel move. For any Meta casualties out there, I hope you know this reflects more of him than it does on you. Also, I would be more inclined to sue with these public comments since it goes to reputation.
