I went through this when my grandma was dealing with dementia. I lived with her for 6 months and her decline was heartbreaking to watch. Went from one of the sharpest, most intelligent people I knew to forgetting the word "water" in a couple months. My sister helped out a lot too, which made things a little easier. And there were some lighter moments throughout, particularly when something would jog her failing memory and she'd temporarily snap back into the person I knew. I took solace knowing I was allowing her to stay as long as possible in the home she loved, but it was still one of the more painful experiences of my life. You've got my sympathies, friend. Do whatever you have to to keep your energy and spirits up.

Thank you for sharing that. I can only imagine how tough that was to go through. It’s good you had your sister to lean on and some moments of light in the middle of it all. Really appreciate the kind words.

I have not been in this situation just yet but I have seen my mum doing it for my grandma. I guess there is only way to stay balanced, that is when someone else is sharing the duty with you.
Pro
Totally! Having someone to share the load makes such a huge difference, it’s so easy to get overwhelmed otherwise.
I appreciate that not everybody is in a situation where this is even an option, but we hired a caregiver. It felt incredibly wrong at first, not doing it ourselves. However, it was to a point where everybody was burnt out, and we know she wasn’t getting the care she deserved because we were so set on doing it ourselves.

Absolutely, it’s so hard to let go, but sometimes getting help is the best way to actually provide better care. It’s great you recognized that before everyone burned out.
I haven’t been a caregiver yet but i respect anybody that is a caregiver. It’s not easy but y’all make it look easy. My friend is a caregiver to her mother and she always told me what makes her stay balanced is making sure she has other people that can help her as well.
Pro
Absolutely! Caregiving is no joke, and having a support system makes such a huge difference. Hats off to your friend for finding that balance!
Isn't there I family leave act that workers have as an option to take time off? I'm not remotely suggesting this for you as an option but maybe for others.
I've seen more than once where I worked long standing supervisors being pushed out for situations arising as at one time or another will, due to
Family matters... emergencies...
Pro
Yeah, there’s definitely family leave options for situations like that. It’s unfortunate how sometimes even long-standing supervisors can end up in tough spots because of unavoidable family matters.
