Depends on your firm. The age old keep the young ones down and profit in our pocket philosophy is the fruit of the poisonous tree - you only got the referral because you had the privilege of working on something that was originated by another attorney and therefor anything that derives from that for the indefinite future is tied to that original originator. Ask me how I know - sold a business that was another attorney’s client (they originated), opposing counsel was impressed by me and a partner colleague and wanted to have us to do legal work afterwards, work left with that partner colleague when he left, but I brought it back to the firm. Client has NO IDEA who original originator is but guess who somehow still has a claim over it.
