You ready for a pay cut?
At just a few years older, I recently left to go do something with purpose and despite it being a scary as heck decision, it definitely feels right for my soul. I’m now not stressed, feel like I’m contributing to society, helping people, and have a purpose. Do it! Life is meant to be lived. You got this! Have a great adventure!
I was a high school English, creative writing, and drama teacher in a big city before advertising, ask away! It was one of the hardest, but most fulfilling jobs.
What were your reasons for the switch? I’m not getting the same joy working in this industry anymore. It’s a young persons game and I don’t have the energy or care to keep up.
If you don’t have a undergrad degree in teaching you’d have to get a master’s in education. I had a BFA and looked into briefly before getting into advertising.
Public schools require it (plus student teaching). Private does not.
If you stay in NYC it’ll be easier to get a job as an art teacher but still might be hard. If you want to move to the suburbs it will be nearly impossible. People stay put once they’re tenured and 50k goes way further upstate than in the city.
Not sure if NY still does this, but several years ago there was a program where NY paid for your masters, but you had to teach and it came with some stipulations for length and assignment, but I know a friend who did it 7-8 years ago. With recent cuts it may or may not exist, but could be worth researching.
OP, my partner is a NYC public school teacher and I do know her school is looking for an art teacher (brooklyn). She did it after a career switch and knows all the hoops you'd need to jump through. Feel free to DM me
Maybe start as a private school art teacher before getting your degree and certification to work in the public schools. That way you can see how much you like it. My friend is doing this in her 50s - but not from an advertising background. Some changes to 529 policy may make for higher enrollment for private school students and growth there - although fewer foreign students in NYC this year could cut down enrollment at private schools.
