Although Amazon has instituted a hiring freeze and layoffs are probably on their way, I went through the loop for a security engineer position at AWS. Before I attended the final interviews, Amazon placed the hiring freeze and called me to ask if I wanted to go ahead or cancel my application. I decided do go ahead Right now I'm waiting for their response and the position I applied to changed from "under consideration" to "no longer under consideration". Thoughts?

Some thoughts in no particular order:
1) Don’t be so sure they’ve got something better. In technology it’s exponentially easier to get the first 90% than the last 10%.
2) Learn the new tools, even if you don’t like them. In recent history knowing more about emerging technology than the average bear has been the key to oursized salaries.
3) Getting more than your fair share of attention has never been easy, and it still won’t be easy when everyone has AI. So keep figuring out how to do that.
4) Historically, media and modes of creation never die. The printing press didn’t kill public speaking, the radio didn’t kill the written word, television didn’t kill the radio, electronic music didn’t kill traditional instruments, the internet gave birth to podcasts, a new golden age of TV, etc. So AI will displace and disrupt, but ultimately slot in to the media ecosystem.
5) AI will change the media landscape in ways that are impossible to know. For example, when the whole internet is fake, is it still compelling?Or do we retreat to an era of rarified media experience, where you make a day of listening to your favorite album, or go to the movies as a family on Friday night? Maybe, maybe not.
Why do you say that?
I do creative on the side and I think it will keep circling back to: originality. When every single piece of content becomes far too “perfect”it becomes nothing more than a GIF. It takes an entire village to create an actually authentic piece of work that not only stands out, it strikes you at your emotions in the best of ways. Great for cost effective social media marketing where it will likely be ignored in 3 seconds for some teenager doing a dance. Cultural relevancy is something I think AI will never catch on to quickly, like viral memes or videos or being an unfiltered mess that we as humans are and need to connect. How do you teach tone to something that can’t do anything but regurgitate off stolen data and art?
Anyway - I do wonder what the regulatory landscape will look like with IP in the next few years, and I think AI will actually create an even bigger market for indie artists and creatives because of their unique styles
100%.
AI democratizes production. Many companies will think that’s enough for a while. But when everything can look great, it’s all about what breaks through. And that is good for creativity.
If the rise of influencer culture has taught us anything, it’s that consumers want to see real people. Things ebb and flow and AI will keep getting better but is there really anyone out there who wants to watch content of fake people? I have my doubts.
There are male and female "models" on FB with come hither looks and treasure trail thirst traps, with thousands of Boomer followers offering up money to "help them pay the rent". All AI. Anything the past decade has taught me is that people are stone cold dumb. Bring on the asteroids.
