I love my bmw x1 and x3 but not sure about off-roading. We rented a bronco that was very fun and definitely off-road ready.
I have an x1 and don’t consider it good for off-roading. Tires got all torn up and man they are expensive. Also the bottom would occasionally scrape on the ground. Bought a used 4runner for off-roading and LOVE it
If you love off-roading, have you looked at the 4Runner hybrid? 4 runners can last forever, if taken care of properly, even if the upfront investment is a little higher. Definitely not compact though.
Thank you! 4Runner hybrid offers 23mpg
Lexus RXh is awesome I get 35mpg, but the car is not meant to off road.
Toyota RAV4 or Highlander is awesome. They last for years, low cost of maintenance, VERY reliable. There are good Lexus options too
Love my Lexus GX550 - the Overtrail package has all the off road suspension, locking differential, skid pans, 35” tires, etc. Tons of room.
I bought it from a Lexus dealership last summer when they first came out. Was on a waiting list for this particular model/trim package…. Ends up dealerships were getting an “allocation” of certain models. We met with the sales guy, told him what we wanted. When he found out they were getting one to our specs, he called and we put a deposit on it.
If you read up on it, the GX was designed with off-roading in mind - example, you won’t rip the dam/bumper off on descents, rocks, etc given how the approach was designed.
I love my mini countryman. I didn’t love the 100% electric but considering trading in my 2021 for the 2025. It’s not super quiet on the inside but zero maintenance issues and can park it anywhere and surprisingly roomy. Often have 3-4 adults in it. I also test drove the Subaru sport. Toss up between the two. Went with the one that was more fun. I don’t off-road but the mini gamifies when you do and you get points. I’m in a city (chicago) and have garage parking.
For luxury brands, consider that all maintenance is more expensive: oil change, tires, etc. Also, if you don’t have dealership nearby and near places you travel, it can be a pain. I like to hike, and I worried about taking my “fancy” suv to the places I wanted to go— might get scratched, or chips in the windshield. Last year we looked at the 4Runner and a Jeep. Ended up the Jeep Grand Cherokee and we are happy with it.
4Runner!!
I believe X1 is same chassis as my Mini Countryman; I’m good with snow and such but it is not an off road vehicle.
