Did you take any time off pre-labor?

Yes! I’m in California and we get 4 weeks before before the due date that you can take or you lose it so it doesn’t roll over to use after labor. (If the baby is early you forfeit the remainder of the 4 weeks, but if the baby is late, you get extra time. My baby came two days before her due date but I only “forfeited” one day because she was due on a Saturday.) If you have that option, do it! At 36 weeks I was huge and swollen and uncomfortable. I was always out of breath. I didn’t sleep well because I was constantly tossing and turning like a rotisserie chicken and I had to pee ALL NIGHT LONG. Suffice it to say, I was not rested. So I appreciated that time tremendously.

I did for both of my kids. Highly recommend. The first time I tried to work until I gave birth and ended up miserable. I ended up taking off right before my due date, and the baby was a week late. After I stopped working, being nine months pregnant became a lot more bearable. I took off two weeks before my planned induction with my second.

I took two weeks off from my due date. Ended up being a smart decision because ended up with a scheduled C section one and a half week before my due date.

Take the time. Pregnancy is hard. It’s been really hard for me to sleep, stand on my feet for even five minutes, and function overall. That little bit of extra time is going to go a long way for your own sanity and health.

I worked up until I gave birth with my first kid and regretted it. With the second I took off 2 weeks before the due date, assuming she'd come early like her sister. Baby girl came at 41 weeks instead. I look back on that time with so much fondness. It really helped me transition back into the rhythm and headspace of baby land.

This seems to hard to predict. Like what if you plan to take one week off before your due date, but the baby comes two weeks early? Or - two weeks late?

This is what I’m worried about. If I take the week before my due due and then end up wasting two and a half weeks before the baby comes, I’m going to be annoyed.

I’m due at Christmas, so don’t expect to be working right up to the finish line anyway.

Not officially but my firm was very flexible and I worked from home most of my third trimester. I had preeclampsia and needed to keep my blood pressure down.

I did not, but I also wasn’t in a state that provided guaranteed pre-labor leave, so if I’d taken leave early, it would have reduced my time off with baby. But if extra leave is available to you, absolutely take it. And if you’re unwell or really miserable, it’s probably worth taking time off in advance even if you lose a little time after baby arrives.

Congratulations!

I feel fine in my own skin most of the time but when I am in new and unfamiliar situations I get crazy body dysmorphia and super concious of my physicality. Any ideas on what I can I do to temper those feelings?
