Consulting, though I’d be looking to build modest technical skills in both. I have a background in data engineering (7 months), applied statistics (undergraduate), and strategic data architecture (7 months). I feel I’ll need to grow all three, but I’d like to excel in one. Do you think the ML/analytics side has the same pay premium? I was under the impression it had more.

Sounds like data engineering v. analytics. Do whichever speaks to you more, both have solid prospects and a good amount of breadth with where they can go. Neither field will vanish out of under you, so long as you adapt to new ideas and tech over time.
